Story to the Death is a recurring student mainstage production at The Hideout Theatre. It first ran in August 2016, and has been scheduled for a second run in February 2018.

Summary
Publicity Blurb
Life is short and you deserve only the best. The cast of Story to the Death begin five completely different improvised stories, only to have the audience slowly but surely kill off the ones that fail to thrill and/or intrigue. One amazing story will survive to its exciting conclusion in the second half of the show.

Every single element of Story To The Death is completely improvised based on audience suggestions. It might start the night with 1) a Western, 2) a Soap Opera, 3) a touching story of redemption, 4) an Action Movie and 5) a Mockumentary. By the end of the night, based on Audience Choices, the show will end up with a story that has compelling characters, hilarious “special effects” and an epic, climactic ending.

Brent Chismark is a stage and technical improvisor and transplant from Metro Detroit, MI.

Summary
Brent's earliest improv experience comes from playing basic short-form games in high school acting classes and as part of rehearsals for scripted productions.

After providing some technical consulting to the pilot episode of the Tales from The Black Vault podcast, and making the decision to move to Austin, he joined the Tales from The Black Vault team as a production engineer in 2015, working remotely on around half of the first season's episodes.

On arriving in Austin in June of 2015, he started taking classes at The Hideout Theatre, joining Andy Crouch's Level 1, continuing with Level 2 with Jessica Arjet and Kareem Badr and then through levels 3-6 with Kareem and his cohort (known as "Zippy Spork".)

In December of 2015, Brent participated in his first Maestro Raw, winning the coveted CAD$5.

His first foray into Technical Improvising was with the 2016 run of Austin Secrets in March/April, where he worked on that show's interstitial scoring. Later, he created the "hosting" video sequences for the May/June 2016 run of Fiasco, and was enlisted to create the opening video animation for How I Saved the World Over Summer Vacation during that show's May/June 2017 run.

In late 2017, he used his knowledge of TV production as a technical advisor to Local on the Eights which is the first Hideout show to include a simulated Live TV news broadcast as part of each show.

Outside of improv, Brent works remotely for an IT Outsourcing company as "the guy that makes pretty graphs that show how well we're doing our job." He also has a history of "minor fame and infamy" in the contemporary a cappella community.

Traditional Mainstage Shows
The Hideout's traditional mainstage shows happen at 8pm on Saturdays. Starting in 2009, each show has had a run that lasts for two months -- though on rare occasions, especially successful shows are 'held over' into 6pm productions in the following month.

1999-2006
In the early years, specific runs of shows were rare. Apart from Start Trekkin, Sean Hill presented various Keith Johnstone formats in its Saturday 8pm slot.
Student Mainstage Shows
Starting in 2014, the Hideout began presenting two mainstage shows every Saturday: their 'traditional' mainstage shows in the downstairs theater, and student mainstage shows, featuring either current or recent Hideout students, in their upstairs theater. Each student mainstage runs for a single month.

In 2014 and 2015, the student mainstages were curated by Ruby Willmann, with Caeriel Crestin taking over the job in 2016.

From the 2018 show announcement:
Life is short and you deserve only the best. The cast of Story to the Death begin five completely different improvised stories, only to have the audience slowly but surely kill off the ones that fail to thrill and/or intrigue. One amazing story will survive to its exciting conclusion in the second half of the show.

Starting with The Great Mundane in 2006, the Hideout went to a more regular schedule of one-to-two month show runs. These included sketch shows, genre shows, troupe shows, and traditional Johnstone formats.
The Kindness of Strangers was a Hideout mainstage show inspired by the work of playwright Tennessee Williams.

Promotional Blurb
Mid-20th century America: the second World War is over, and people of every class are rebuilding their lives. The world is changing: old money is evaporating, and prosperity is knocking for others. No matter if they’re on their way up or down, everyone has a secret, everyone is covetous of what they do not have, and everyone is capable of tenderness and violence in equal measure. The heat is on, and it’s only getting hotter.

The Kindness of Strangers is a journey through the lurid, steamy world of the American South in the style of one of America’s greatest playwrights: Tennessee Williams. Troubled men, spellbinding women, and a touch of magic come together to create stories that are hilarious and heartbreaking all at once.
How I Saved the World Over Summer Vacation (often referred to by the nickname Kids on Bikes) was a Hideout mainstage show that drew inspiration from kid-oriented ensemble action/sci-fi/horror movies set in the 1980s.

Promotional Blurb
It’s summertime, somewhere in 1980s America. It’s a neighborhood like so many other neighborhoods. The lawns are trimmed. The schools are good. And as the sun begins to set, the shadows seem a little bit longer. There’s something hiding in the darkness, ready to take our world as its own. Aliens? Monsters? Time travelers? Whatever the threat is, there’s only one group that can stop them…as long as they’re home before 10pm!

Inspired by suburban coming of age sci fi stories like E.T., IT, Monster Squad, The Goonies, and even modern homages like Super 8 and Stranger Things, How I Saved the World Over Summer Vacation takes us all back to an age when it seemed like time went on forever, grown ups were the enemy, and all you needed to rule your neighborhood was a bike, a group of friends, and an imagination…all of which made you the best prepared to perceive any threat (even if those dumb old grown ups wouldn’t believe you), behold wonders (even if you had to hide them away from those dumb old grown ups), and save the world (because those dumb old grown ups sure aren’t gonna do it!).

The Knuckleball Now is an improv troupe that focuses on high-energy montage.

Summary
Press Blurb
This is from the "philosophy" section of their web site:

"The Knuckleball Now is an improv comedy troupe based in Austin... but first and foremost, TKN is a philosophy, an energy and a way of thinking. It's all about having fun with fearless enthusiasm. It's having an unwavering faith in each other, where the brain synapses are in sync, and there is a connection through chaos."

History
The troupe was formed in 2005.

Here is Mike D'Alonzo's explanation of the name's origin:

The second time we ever had a rehearsal for our new troupe, David Modigliani was distracted by the idea that the Boston Red Sox were about to drop their fourth straight game to the New York Yankees in the ACLS, so he asked if we wanted to go and watch the game before rehearsal, and it turned out to be the game that vaulted the Sox back into the series, which they would eventually win, and then go on to break the curse and win the Series. On the mound that night was the greatest knuckleballer of our time, Tim Wakefield, and we were all super impressed.

Cut to a couple days later. We made a list of names for our new troupe, and the only word that appeared on everyone's list was "knuckleball." We knew it was meant to be, but then, we couldn't figure out what to do with it. Modig sort of came up with "The Knuckelball Now" as a double entendre to say 1. this is a weird time we're living in (and it was) and 2. our troupe will be completely different in our approach (which it was). The name stuck, and it gave Craigy an excellent opportunity to do a whole lot of baseball-related promotion, which lasted a few years.

They have appeared in every Out of Bounds Comedy Festival from 2005 to 2014.

In 2014 Lee Eddy, after a long absence, re-joined The Knuckleball Now.

The Knuckleball Now was honored with the Rudy Kloptic Award for Oustanding Improvisational Troupe at the 2017 B. Iden Payne Awards.
Chris Villafano is an improv performer in Austin, Tx. He's one of the few improvisers that is actively pursuing the MITCH (Merlin Works, Institution,The New Movement, ColdTowne, and Hideout).

History
Chris moved to Round Rock in 2011, where he would frequently visit Austin. It wasn't until July 2011 when he saw an improv show at The Hideout. His life would forever change. Despite being an avid audience member, Chris had no desires to become a performer. It wasn't until late 2011, after the demise of the lottery shows, that he decided to pursue improv classes. The journey started in 2012 and the rest is history.

On arriving in Austin in June of 2015, he started taking classes at The Hideout Theatre, joining Andy Crouch's Level 1, continuing with Level 2 with Jessica Arjet and Kareem Badr and then through levels 3-6 with his cohort (known as "Zippy Spork") and Kareem.

In December of 2015, Brent participated in his first Maestro Raw, winning the coveted CAD$5.

His first foray into Technical Improvising was with the 2016 run of Austin Secrets in March/April, where he worked on that show's interstitial scoring. Later, he created the "hosting" video sequences for the May/June 2016 run of Fiasco, and was enlisted to create the opening video animation for How I Saved the World Over Summer Vacation during its May-June 2017 run.

Outside of improv, Brent works remotely for an IT Outsourcing company as "the guy that makes pretty graphs that show how well we're doing our job." He also has a history of "minor fame and infamy" in the contemporary a cappella community.
Each performance features three interwoven stories, each one centered on a loving relationship. These relationships may not be traditionally romantic ones -- while it could be the story of two lovers, it could also be the story of a man and his dog. Each performer plays one character through an entire performance, perhaps featuring as a protagonist in the first story, a supporting character in the second, and a momentary "extra" in the third. The show emphasizes honest, grounded scenes and vulnerability, similar to the style of British improv duo Ten Thousand Million Love Stories.

History
At the end of opening night of I Love You So Much, improviser Ryan Hill proposed to improviser Jen Kaplan, during a contrived "bonus scene" set up by Roy Janik and Jessica Arjet. The directors and some of the cast knew about this plan ahead of time and assisted with the plans. (She said yes.) The proposer's son, Dean Palm, was in the tech booth.

Later in the run, an audience member proposed to his girlfriend during a show (she also said yes).
Quinn Buckner is an improv performer, software engineer, and all around cool guy.

History
In 2008 while attending UT Quinn saw some Gigglepants shows on campus and fell in love with the way someone could get on stage and be bound by nothing more than the imagination. He had to wait till the next year to try out as the auditions had happened the month before. In September of 2009 he auditioned, made it in and met friends and future troupe mates Colin Bates and Kyle Traughber. In November he started taking classes at Merlin Works Institute for Improvisation and went through 101-601 back to back. While still in 101 via the Merlin Works Mixers he made it into his first troupe Anticdotes coached by Ace Manning. In March of 2010 he got invited to be apart of his first main stage show, the 2010 run of Guilds of Steel and in September became co-leader of Gigglepants. 2010 was also his first festival as he played in The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival with Anticdotes. In August of 2011 he started TA'ing for Merlin Works with 101. 2012 saw his first out of state festival in the attendance of Hawaii's Improvaganza with The Professor: Improv Inspired by Doctor Who as well as his first The Hideout Theatre main stage show, Fandom. In 2013 he was asked to join his first continually running show as a member of the newly starting The Big Bash. 2014 was the year he and Ryan Austin formed Austin/Austin his first duo and focused improv project. At the start of 2015 he started officially teaching at the Hideout. He is still performing and teaching on a regular basis

Fiasco is the May/June 2016 mainstage production at The Hideout Theatre.

Summary
The show is an improvised crime caper, adapted from the Bully Pulpit Games RPG and loosely inspired by Coen Brothers films. It is an ensemble show with elements of farce that focuses on criminal plans going very, very wrong.

Structure
The show opens with a short monolog. After that, act one begins with a set of five scenes, establishing a circular chain of relationships, like in a La Ronde. Further scenes follow until about the forty-minute mark, when "the tilt" is introduced. The tilt is a pair of of phrases that describe story elements that will tend to cause chaos. (One example: "Something precious is on fire".) After that is intermission. Then, the players draw on the tilts in the show's (slightly shorter) second half. The show ends with a second monolog from that opening character, which touches on the eventual fates of the central characters.

Tone
The tagline for Fiasco is that it's about "powerful ambition and poor impulse control". Generally, the characters are heightened, with strong desires and really poor planning. Ideally, the first half of the show puts a lot of bad ideas into play -- "Look, we'll just put the suitcase with ten thousand dollars in the back of your El Camino, and hand it over to Big Mike on Wednesday -- everything will be *fine*." -- so that when the tilt comes into the picture, all those fragile plans go wrong. (e.g., now the El Camino is on fire.)

The show aims for a sort of gasping laughter -- the avalanche of disaster is hilarious, but its dire consequences for the characters can feel sad or scary or daunting. There's a strong sense of conveying genuine, relatable emotions *through* the heightened characters, and aiming to make the audience feel like they're on the characters' side instead of feeling detached from the story.

Tech
The set includes a large display screen, which shows 'hosting videos' (short video segments that convey the information that a live host would normally do) and displays words and phrases that inspire the onstage activity. (A prompt for the initial monolog; short descriptions of the five relationships; the tilt.)

Publicity Blurb
From the show announcement:
A crime caper goes disastrously wrong in this improvised dark comedy, inspired by Coen Brothers classics like Fargo and The Big Lebowski. Based on the award-winning RPG.

Later, he created the "hosting" video sequences for the May/June 2016 run of Fiasco.

Outside of improv, Brent works remotely for an IT Outsourcing company as "the guy that makes pretty graphs that show how well we're doing our job." He also has a history of "minor fame and infamy" in the contemporary a cappella community.
