RhinoDino is an improv troupe that focuses on short-form improv and modifying existing games to make them more interesting.

History

The troupe was initially conceptualized sometime in 2011 by good friends Quinn Buckner, Kyle Traughber, and Colin Bates as a troupe that would perform "improvised heavy metal." This format was never realized, but RhinoDino began playing short-form shows together at Salvage Vanguard Theater in early 2012 as the "House Troupe" for "The Derby". In September, 2012, Lacy Shawn and Courtney Hopkin joined RhinoDino. Colin Bates recently re-located to Houston, but the remainder of the troupe remains intact and continues to perform monthly at the Salvage Vanguard Theater.

Format

RhinoDino primarily performs short-form improv, with a specialization in naive games. RhinoDino currently has a show at Salvage Vanguard Theater on the fourth Friday of every month at 10PM. RhinoDino has also performed at The Hideout Theatre, The Institution Theater, ColdTowne Theater, and The New Movement.

Specialized Games

Trinoceros: This is a deconstruction of the naive game 3 Things and has gone through several iterations. There are 3 sections that serve as a ramp up to the audience to the idea of a naive game without much explanation. First phase is to play a round of 3 Things while still being able to use words, similar to Shopkeeper. Second phase is a normal round of 3 Things. Last round has undergone the most changes ranging from super hard restrictions placed on the players (lights out, no moving, etc...) to super hard suggestions ("existentialism", "Grover Cleveland", etc... )
