Showdown – Sixth Episode: "Death and Texas" refers to the sixth and final performance of Showdown, which was improvised on 4/9/11.

Episode Summary

  • Sheriff Solomon squares off with Caleb. The Texas Ranger offers his help against Clement. Solomon turns him down and suggests that Caleb leaves town.
  • George is excited because his condition seems to have been healed by Clarinda’s ministrations.
  • Clement visits the barbershop but becomes agitated by the sight of the razor and leaves hurriedly.
  • Fancy and Angelica consider their options and their future together.
  • Clement visits the restaurant but becomes more and more delirious. He finally collapses and the minister is summoned because his wound seems to be festering.
  • Sheriff Solomon returns to his house and finds himself unable to forgive Delilah for trying to kill Sam Houston. In a fit of anger he strangles her.
  • The minister tries his best to save Clement and cleans the wounds. The prospect for his recovery seems very slim.
  • Fabian Smith, a fellow church-goer, offers a business proposition to Miss Jessie: he wants to open a funeral parlor with her. She agrees and they become equal partners.
  • Caleb and Adelaide are about to leave town with the Burnet campaign money, but are surprised by the Sheriff. He offers to let the one go that will kill the other. Caleb draws on the Sheriff but gets shot. The Sheriff then shoots Adelaide while she grieves over her dead lover.
  • Fancy and Miss Jessie have a tense conversation about Fancy’s future. Miss Jessie suggests for Fancy to go east and meet her cousin Lucy Stone, a political rabble rouser.
  • The minister comes to the Jewel and reveals to Fancy that Clement’s outlook is very bad. Fancy gives him laudanum wine to ease Clement’s pain.
  • George visits the barbershop to get a shave before returning to Celia. His high spirits are shared by the barber and George suggests he should visit Clarinda too.
  • Johnny Matthews joins Sam Houston and Jacob on their way out of town. Houston hires him into his staff. They get waylaid by the Comanche and have to flee after Houston’s attempt at appeasing them fails.
  • George returns to Celia and shares his new-found confidence with her.
  • The Sheriff confronts Clement as Fancy is trying to make her peace with him prior to leaving with Angelica. Clement reveals parts of his rough past and finally draws a gun to defend himself against the enraged Sheriff. Solomon shoots him.
  • Hank confesses his intimate moment with Celia to Jebediah who gives him sage advice on how to curb his excitement when dealing with a woman.
  • The funeral parlor sees its first business with Adelaide’s body and Fabian has second thoughts as to whether he is cut out for the job. Miss Jessie shows her strength and takes charge.
  • The Sheriff offers Judge Clancy half the money he took from Caleb and Adelaide to make him leave town rather than shoot it out. The Judge abides.
  • Escaping the Jewel after Clement’s murder, the minister offers Clarinda and Fancy sanctuary from Sheriff Solomon’s wrath in the church. Fancy insists on getting Angelica. The minister offers to do it for her.
  • The Sheriff goes for a shave and is served by the rattled barber.
  • Zeke Preston appears to the Sheriff in a vision and tells him to forgive himself for killing his best friend. He urges him to stop going down the path of violence before he kills someone innocent.
  • Hank tries to continue his flirtations with Celia. She tells him that she is pregnant by George and and shows the door to a confused and sad Hank.
  • Fancy convinces Angelica to come east with her to join the suffragettes. She offers to take Clarinda, but she declines and decides to stay in Showdown.
  • A man arrives in town with his cattle drive and delivers one of his ranch hands who got struck dead by lightning to the funeral parlor. His arrival is seen as a first sign of better times ahead and Miss Jessie takes him to the saloon while Fabian is left to tend to the corpse.
  • Clarinda offers Sheriff Solomon her services to ease his troubled mind. He offers to take her for a walk and show her his land instead.
  • The citizens of Showdown congregate at the Jones’ restaurant and following George’s example toast to better times ahead.
