Summary
Kathy Rose plays with improv whenever time and opportunity allows. She especially enjoys the in-depth character work of improvised theater.
History
In 2004, Kathy Rose took her first improv class, "Crossing the Chasm from Theater to Life," a 2-day Omega Institute class at The Crossings in Austin, taught by Alan Arkin. She studied with Alan again in 2005 and 2008. (The session in 2005 was an advanced intensive 5-day retreat on the island of Molokai, Hawaii.)
In 2007-2008, she completed levels 1-4 with Shana Merlin and performed with the all-girl troupe Pom-Pom Sisterhood. In 2011, she joined Asaf Ronen's Improv Master Class at The Institution Theater. Asaf created the troupe Grey Matters to showcase the dark comedic chemistry of Kathy Rose, Madeline Jo Chauvin, and Todd Hart.
In 2012, Kathy Rose completed the Hideout Theater's levels 1-3, taught in north Austin by Troy Miller, with the hope of creating a northern cadre of improv performers. Still waiting for that to jell...
Kathy Rose likes to take workshops each year to continue refreshing and expanding her skills. These have included clowning with Deanna Fleysher, trance mask work with Steve Jarand, impro theater with Keith Johnstone, narrative intensives with Parallelogramophonograph, and numerous workshops with David Razowsky, Jill Bernard, Todd Stashwick, Tim Orr and other visiting instructors.
In 2013, she applied her improv skills to her professional acting work, becoming "G.G. Norwood," Curator of the Curtis Creek Creature Museum for the short film (mockumentary) "My Monster," directed by Scott Rice. And in 2014, she largely improvised a scene for the pilot episode of "American Crime" for ABC Studios, under the direction of writer/director John Ridley (2013 Oscar winner for best adapted screenplay, "12 Years a Slave").
